Camp Ford Military Prison,
Tyler,Texas, July 9, 1864
My very dear Wife:
Since I last wrote you, an order has arrived, sending all soldiers here who were captured before April, 1864, over the lines. This includes one thousand men and eighty officers. They leave for home this morning. Lieuts. Scott and McIntire and several privates of the 77th arrived here from Camden this week. Four privates (named Calvert, Taylor and two Slotterbeck's) died here. M Ward, F. Booth, H. Scott J. Imhoff, J Balderson and A. Grim are sick. All the rest of the Regiment are well. The sick are doing well. The regiment did nobly at Marks Mills.
We hear rumors of prospects of our exchange soon; but fear we will not see home for months. Write me often, dearest. I would give anything to hear from you every mail. A word about each of the children, Emma, Frank, Lee and Lynn would be cheering. Much love to all of them, and to you. Kind regards to friends. I fear many of my letters have not reached you.
I am enjoying myself as much as a man can well under the circumstances. We get plenty of bread and good beef to eat. Chess playing is the principal passtime here.
As ever yours
A.W. McCormick
Capt 77th Ohio.
