Andrew W. McCormick to Alice J. McCormick, 8 March 1865
On board Steamer A G Brown,
Lake Ponchartrain, La
March 8th, 1865.

My very dear Wife
I am now on my way to the Regt on Dauphine Island, and will arrive there by noon to-morrow I presume. I will then muster out as soon as possible and come home at once.

Just before I left New Orleans, yesterday, orders came that the furloughed men go to Cairo on the W. R. Arthur at 5 o'clock last evening; so they will be at home soon. They have furloughs from March 20 to Apl 18, and I must see most of them before they return to the South as I am to collect their ration money, and their signature to vouchers will be necessary. I am to collect for 274 men at $3.61 each—nice little sum and worth going to Co- / lumbus and Washington for. We go on the Steamer Alice Vivian, and she moves at once, so this is all I can write at present. The boys get $78.61 each and give me all over $75 each.

Yours
AWMcC

P.S. If I telegraph or write you to come to Marietta or Columbus, I hope you will come, as in that case it will be impossible for me to come to Pa till I have arranged this business.

Don't you think I would do well as a lawyer and claims agent at Columbus O?
