James B. Jordan to Martha E. Fearn, 30 June 1865
Raleigh N. Carolina
June 30th 1865

Dear Cousin Mattie,
I know you will think it very strange that I have not written before, but since we arrived in town I have done nothing but run around looking up old acquaintances and meeting friends. I have had a gay time I assure you for the last 10 days. If it was not for the infernal Yalkees being quartered here, I could get along splendidly. I enjoy my freedom to the utmost. we are under the military rule here and everything has to be done according to tactics but with all that we manage to get along very well, especialy among the young [?], and old soldier, or a returned prisoner, can have a gay time if he wishes. there is a certain few who will not countenance a Banken Officr and smile upon none but soldiers of the Southern Cross. Our people are torn up teribly every thing is destroyed that the contemptible Yankee could lay his hands upon every thing is destroyed in the country, and some of the poorer classes are suffering—But we fondly hope it will not last long. they promise us that they will leave some time         I wrote you from Fortress Monroe and again at Moorehead City—did you get them? I shall remain in Raleigh for some time, and I hope to hear from you soon, and if I am successful here for a few months I will pay you that promised visit before late in the fall any how provided my visit would be agreeable. I should not come unless I hear from you again I do not know what changes have taken place in your sentiment, since the C.S. went up. Let me hear from you as soon as convenient. My folks were taken by surprise. they thought me "gone forever"—

Yours Ever—
J B Jordan
