William Young to John J. Young, 22 August 1865
Independence Ohio Aug 22nd 1865.

Dear Brother,
Your kind letter of the 17th Ins't. has come to hand this afternoon, and I haste to reply Very glad to hear that you are well. Our folks are all in usual health with the exception of Gust, who was a little agueish yesterday. The weather has been fine for a week. last night it rained, but cleared off again this afternoon. The sky is clear and beautiful to night. I suppose you are the same as myself when in the army—want to hear all the news from home I will try and tell you a few this time. Our crops all look fine. Gust has commenced harvesting his tobacco, which promises good. We sold our old tob. yesterday, for which we got $89.00 Dolls Tobacco is selling for three and eight cents per lbs / Gust will commence ploughing for wheat to morrow. Our grain is not threshed yet. I hve been to work for Abell, about one week, and bargained today for (18) eighteen dolls per month. I should not have hired for that, but have come to the conclusion to stay at home till you return so I thought better take that than be idle the work will not be hard. Abells are going to Vermount to on a visit and want me to stay during their absence. They expect to stay six weeks. They are talking of you renting the store all the while. I asked Mr Abell the other day if he would rent the farm too. he said he would, all but a small part of it. I told him I would leave it to you when you returned home. they want you to have the first chance. For my part, I think if we should rent the place at all, we ought to have full possession of the place. Otherwise, I do not think it adviseable to rent. You can do as you please. /

Our Soldier Boys are getting scattered in different directions. Tov Henderson to has gone a trip to Toledo on the Steamer Corcoran. Charley H is to work for Woodward at present. Lewis Shasteen has been to work for B Weidenhamer by the month he is a little sick at pres't. Noah Hull (that married Rachel Rose) is blacksmithing near the new Church. Nat Vandusen is to work at his trade Ed Metz is clerking for Chas Kahlo at Napoleon. There have been two wedings in our neighborhood lately one was a Miss Susan Rincer to a Soldier from the East part of Ohio. The other was a Miss Lib Shoup to Garret Brookwalter. Levi Shoup & Nancy Mincell are supposed to be the next on the list for the matrimonial servise. There was Church last Sabbath at 3 P.M. it was farewell sermon. twelve of the young lambs were taken in the Church on Probation / I did not attend myself as promises called me away at that hour.

I have not been to any parties lately. last Thursday, I was to work and did not attend.

I understand that a young school marm was favored with an epistle from your hand a few days ago.—

The girls are all as sweet as molasses-candy yet they do not pitch with the young heroes that have lately returned from the war, as we antisipated. They like the brave lads that stayed with mam. You say you would like to know who the one is who willingly sings for me Now, I should be pleased to tell you, did I know of any one, but I do not. I am perfectly ignorant of any such one who would entertain me with her charming voice. I should like to tell you the particulars of our balls & picnics but there are so many that are strangers to you, that I do not think it would interest you much after all. The Methodist persuasion are holding prayer meetings two & three times a week where they have their spirutual strength renewed.

It is getting late and I will have to bring this unprofitable letter to a close. Write on receipt of this and tell me what you think of renting from Abells also how and what the prospects of coming home are by this time.

Hoping this may find you enjoying good health I will collapse.

Yours &c.c.
William Young
