Camp Jas Island June 25 1862
 
Dear wife after my best love to you and children I seat my self this eaving to drop you a few lines wich I trust may find you well as t leave me quite well we are doing better now than we were in town We have plenty of picket duty to doo We send 16 men evry day we can see the yankeys plenty of them a cross the river they dont appear to make eny attemp to land again they are giving all the old member of the Com 12 days furlow now and 8 at a time I will get my oun next time that will be 12 days from now thank god for it dear wife I have sent your shoes by Mr Easterby to Tom Hill / you can get them peas and I will plant them when I come home
 
Dear wife make your self satisfied a bout me I will do the best I can and you must do the same for the love that you have for me Dear wife may god bless you and children oh that the time may soon come that your poor darling may soon come that we may be permitted to dwell to gether again Dear wife kiss Paps little ones for him and keep a good share for your darling self May god be with my dear family at home is the prayr of your loving husband untel death
