Oct the 24 1862 Dear wife After my best respects to you and children I seat my self once more this side of the grave to drop you a few lines to in form you that I am well at present hoping that these few lines may find you well and little ones I have nothing of importance to rite you at this time but god has still remember me in many the yankeys landed at Pocotaligo wedness and give our men a smal fite but they whip them of mad them leave 40 of there dead on the field wich our soldiers strip starte naked and lit them lie on the field for 2 days be fore they buried them they just dug a little hole and put some pine brush over them and fill them up I think they left a grate many of their thing on the field blankets and so forth they were scattered for about 3 miles long wich about 5000 strong and Col walker only had 800 men and he kept the yankeys at bay with them and the officers said we only lost 12 or 15 men but we dont now how many yet we lost 12 artilery horses we kill a good many of the horse of the yankeys dear you need not be oneasy about me for we wont have to go in it untel they commence coming out in the country furder than they ever done yet we taken sevearl of the yankeys prisners they say they only wanted to stay ten days out and they would return to their gun boats /
My Dear wife you must remember your promis to me and not fret about me the big officers some of them think the end of the year will decide the war and I pray it may that I may be permitted to return back to my darling family wich I love so well may god ever hover a round my darlings bed side and keep them from all harm Soo my presscous wife dont shed a tear about me god will take care of me there is not a sparrow that fall to the ground with out his will so much more am I than many sparrow I send you some money by moris in this letter Pay mah 25$ out of it I have not got it all yet but I will get it soon from Ackerman. so my dear wife get James to try Stepen Ackerman to get me lether to make me a pair of shoes Smith said he is a fraid he cant get eny soon for me the shoes is scarce hear tel James White said must have 100$ for his horse he said he dont want to make eny thing on him So my wife take care of your self for and children for me dont expose your self make Cuff do every thing you want the negrows reports that the yankeys were caring their dead of all nite in wheel barrows so we must of kill lots of them HHHill
