Camp Charleston May 30/1863
 
Dear wife After my best respects to you and children I avail my self of this opportunity of addressing you with a few lines wich I trust may find you all well I have been quite sick thou i am mending again I have got in to buisness at last or about to get in to it to work on the gun boat or in the black smith shop as a black smith iwill get it fixed to morrow all rite with out a chance I will get about 3.50 a day I expect thou iwill have to board my self wich will cost me rite smart with out I can get it from home or some where else. Me and Easterling will be to gether we can come home every now and then the worse will be with my horse I will have to bring him home / or sell him I would rather sell him if ican get anuff for him thou that will be the worse I dont think there will be enny difficulty about getting in this time thou it will be discided to morrow then we will now our doom exactly dear wife after my best respects to you all you must not be oneasy about me for I will take the best care of my self that I can and you must do the same for the love that you have for me and children rite me now how every thing get along home now May god bless my sweet ones at home and sheild them from all harm is the prayr of one that loves you well that you now then without telling Take care of your self Nothing more at present but remain your loving darling HHH
