Camp James Island July the 6nd. 1863 Seacessionville
 
Dear wife after my best love to you I seat my self this morning for the purpose of addressing you with a few lines wich I trust may find you all well as it leaves me well at this time thou not very well of that pain in my side yet My dear I was glad to get a letter from you and to hear that all was well it affordes me grate pleasure to get a letter from my sweet darling one that loves me so well and one that I love much better than my own life Dear wife I feel like I want to see you worse than I ever did I believe I hope that I may get off this time but they are all ways so many a head of poor me that I am afraid that I wont git off but I trust that god will be with me and help me to get off home once more this side of the grave I would of rote yesterday but did not have time to do it but it was Ration Day and I was very buissy giving it out you rote me word that you heard that we was expecting a fite hear eny day but I dont think that there is eny dangers of it hear our picketts shoot the yankeys most every day and they throw shel among our picketts but dont do eny damage I think that it is rong to shoot them it only makes them burn ous and dose no good at lass give my best respects to Dave and Ann and all the enquiring friends I feel like I am cast off from all the friends that I have all most in the world I am so out done with camp that I dont now what to do with my self / No friend at home to rite me a word of comfort except my poor sweet one Dave mite rite som times if he would do it I think that Sister Mary and John Gruber mus rite but I suppose they dont think anuff of me to do it Try and get them peas home if you can when I do get off I will try and plant them then I hope I may get home be fore this letter dose do my sweat one doant be oneasy about me I will tak the best care of my self that I can do you must do the same for the love that you have for me and them poor little ones Dear wife pray for me I feel like I need the prayr of evry Christian in the world Oncle William is very good to me he has been quite sick then better now Oh may the time soon come when we may meet at home to spend the ballance of our days to gether so that we mite have som more happier days to gether a gain May the god of our heaven spair ous to live some happier days to gether and spedily hast the time for this war to end Lord thou nowest the suffering of thy children May god turn hear to our cry May god bless my sweat Darling ones at home and spair their lives and keep them from all harm is the prayr of one that loves you more than eny thing in the world Nothing more but remain your loving husband untel Death
