My Dear wife I take this opportunity of writing you a few lines wich I trust may find you all well as it leaves me well My sweet one I thot that I would come home be fore now but things still is critical yet there is no yankeys on the island yet but they throw shell every day most at some of ous but they cant hit no one we are up to dogin them My dear you need not to be oneasy about me iwill take care of my self and the god of heaven will preserve me and save me idont fear eny dangers at all I feel that god is with me My dear you must take care of your self and children for me I will try and get off the first safe chance that I can get My Dear iwant to see you more than I ever did I dont now how you look hardly Pah wants to see his poor little boys to bad I got a letter from Brother John Weeks wich give me much comfort I was glad to think that I had one brother that thot a nuff of me to rite some comfort to me Tel dave he must rite to me and let him rite all the news about home and how things stand Tel him I would rite to him but / I have so much to doo on duty all the time nearly some nites dont sleep at all I dont now how white men can stay home now and the negrows trying to run over ous I feel like I can cut their throats every one that I see with arms May god give us strength to kill them all I dont want them to run over my wife and children it is bad a nuff to fite yankeys and not negrows May the time soon come when they may quit [?] is taken up her part again Tel Mah and all houddy for me Tel James to come down with John Gruber he can cross at Ellets Cut with out eny trouble at all May god bless my sweet ones I would send some salt if I had eny way to get it home May god bless you is the prayer of your loving Husband untel Death
