Camp, James Island Sept 7
 
My Dear wife Motives of fraternal love actuate me in addressing a few lines as i am very anxious for you to hear from me this morning and i hope these few lines may find you all well as it leaves me well only worn out for sleep I was courier last nite for the battreys that was under fire all nite and did not have time to get of of my horse hardley for dispatches We had to surrender the battery on Moris Island last nite we lost a grate meny men kill and a good many prisoners they took 58 days to take it ft sumter is gone. they have 10 more battery to take yet be fore they can take Charleston but they is nearer Mother wagner among them I see nothing a head

of ous but annihilation, extermination or subjugation but suffice it to say May god be with ous he is able to save. I witness some poor kill soldiers buried yesterday this is the time to try man sole Maybee it would please you my Dear to hear that the Col has released us intirely I hope you will be better sattisfied about me now may the time soon come when your poor darling will be home again to stay in peace thou the prospects looks bad My dear I will get the salt to day for you you must get James to come down soon after it and Anney must send some potatoes and figgs for me I rote by Mr Jaques yesterday give my love to Mah and all the rest rite as soon as you get this May god be with my dear family and spair their lives good by H.
