Camp Suber James Island Sept 10/63
My dear wife this will in form you that I am well at present and hope that this may find you all the same I have nothing much to rite at this time only that I am still alive there aint much news on the Island now only plenty of yankeys all round it nearly they made an ahsault on fort Sumter but we plaid the mischief with them we killed a grate many of them and taken 113 prisoners 13 officers among them I think that they got it good there we did not loose a man in the fite I trust that it may stop be fore long I am afraid from the papers that we are all most whipt but I trust that god may be with ous and take care of my sweet ones at home. Them that I love so well. / Mother you must take the best care of your self that you can I will do the same we have some very intresting prayr meetings here amongst the baptist the methodist dont partisipate in such things My Dear you must rite me all the news rite me word what hurt your sweet feelings I hope that god may give you strength to stand all the trials that we have to meet with hear I am much oblige to you for the things that you sent me I was most starved out may god bless my sweet ones at home kiss pahs little ones for him may the time soon come when I can see my little ones and mother you dont rite about them mother pah wants to now them little thots to rite me word if you get my letters My dear you better try and get them little shoats in the paster it will help them and feed them so they can grow it is time to make them fat
