Petersburg Va. 22 from Richmond
 
My dear wife this will in form you that i am well and doing prime. We reach Petersburg last nite at 8 oclock and we will go on this eaving to Richmond at 3 oclock and will get to Richmond at 6 this eavning. i like this portion of the country fine but North Carolina is rotten to the cour. the women and citison are both very clever to ous but in Raleigh they are ablutionist Phete sanders is not killed but severly wounded in hed and brest
 
My dear you must write as soon as you get this I feel anxious to hear from you all i am so much hurt at leaving my sweet one crying for me i hope you are better satisfied than you was I dont think the war will last much longer it is the oppinion / of the peple that it will end this year, and i trust it may god knows my hart i would give every thing i have in the world for peace we are 505 miles from home know an when we get to Richmond our men got in to a scrape at Weldon and maj morgan challange the provoh martial for a devel and back him out he said he will fite for the 5th our fellows go where they please we only had Roll Call once and that was to find out who was killed. We get hard bread and bacon to eat Petersburg is a large city and a beautiful place My dear i will write as soon as i can again our horses are 200 miles be hind. May the lord be with you all my sweet one take care of your sweet self and little ones, your loving one   H. Hill
