"My Wife and Children," Henry H. Hill Poem, undated
My Wife and Children

The tatoo beats the lites are gone
The camp around in slumber lies
The nite with solm pace moves on
The shadows thicken over the skies
But sleep my weary eys hath flown
and sad oneasy thought arise

I think of the dearest ones whose
Whose love my early life hath bless
of the and him our baby child
who slumbers on thy gentle brest
God of the tender frail and lorn
O guard the tender sleeper rest

And hover gentley hover near
To her whose watchfull eys is wett
To Mother wife the doubly dear
in whose young hart have freshly mett
Too stream of love so deap and clean
And cheer her drooping spirit yet

Now while she neals be fore thy throne
O teach her ruler of the skies /
That while by thy behest above
Mighty powers fall or rise
No tear is wept to the unnone
No heart is lost no sparrow dies

That though can stay the ruthless hand
of dark deseas and soothe it path
that only by thy stern command
the battles lost the soldiers slain
that from the distance seas or land
Now bringst the wonded home again

And when up Pon her pillow lone
Her teare wet cheek is sadly prest
May hapier visions beam apon
The brightnig curent of her breast
No frowning look or angry tone
Desturb the sabath of her rest

What ever fate those forms may show
Loved with a pashion almost wild
By day by night in joy or woe
By fears opressed or hopes beguile
from evry danger evry foe
oh God protect my wife and children
