Camp Manchester near richmond Va My dear wife this will inform you that i am well We mooved on Tuesday last 5 days a go to meet the enemy near Petersburg and never met them untel yesterday the 10. so we got in to them We were under fire both with artilery and musketry for one hour at wich time we both retired to the woods our loss wer a bout 12 wounded some will die Ben Willis is wounded in arm and simmons in shoulder the loss on our side in all 20 killed and 150 wounded after the fite we sent scurmishers out and they report lots of the enemy kill on the ground under our fire Col Dunovant brag powerfully on our men. My dear i was no more excited than i am know. i just put my / trust in god and took as good site as if i was shooting a buck or eny thing els we are left the field know making our way back to Richmond. it is said our horses is in Richmond. We will go to Richmond in 2 days more we are in 2 miles of richmond know. My dear we captured 59 prisnors.
