we ar about forty miles from Washington & we are ten miles from Fredericksburg we have not heard eny thing from Wolcottes Boys sens the fight nor i have not heard from Dayton Reed sense the Battle at Fredericksburg we are now adrilling evry day we drill in the forenoon on our horses and in the afternoon with our sabers. You wrote about sending me some provision you need not send me any thing to eat we have enough to eat now and that it is good enough we have hard crackers and / shuger coffee & pork & beef & beans and sometimes potatoes when we are on the march we get out of provisions sometimes when the Rebels took our bagage wagons we saw some hard times to get something to eat but sense then we have had a plenty to eat yesterday there was of our men on guard two miles from camp and when they were a coming in to camp they was a coming by a house one of the men was 25 rods behind the other three and when these three men got against the house they was shot dead / and the one it was behind see the men fall from there horses and turned and went through the woods and come in to camp & 200 of our men went to the house and they could not find a man around the house so they drove the women out of house and set fire to it and burnt it to the ground
