Jordan C. Harriss Jr. to John R. Teague and Sarah J. Teague, 24 November 1862
LaGrange Tennessee
Nov 24th 1862

Dear Brother & Sister
I take pleasure in writing an answer to yours of the 19th inst which was duly received and read with gladness We were glad to hear that you were all as well as what you were

We are still in possession of good health and strength

Thos is not able to stand duty yet & Wm Carner's health is not very good yet but we have none in the company who are very sick except one (Jas Rush) who was taken pretty severely to day and has been taken to the hospital. Today I got to hear the guns roaring in battle The news came in this evening that a portion of the enemies Cavalry / Several miles to the southwest of here slipped in this side of our picket guards & tried to cut them off but our sharp-shooters came in contact with them which caused the firing which we heard & checked the design of the enemy causing them to retreat back at double quick with the loss of 30 of their number in prisoners. This is in accordance with the news that came in this evening I did'nt hear of any lives being lost on either side We have been on a grand review under Gen Grant to day

It is night & I have to be on duty about four hours My men are now on guard of Col Dollins' head-quarters & I am sitting before his tent at his fire now writing / by candle-light with a bayonet stuck in the ground to serve for a candle stick

The boys dont have to stand guard here as often as they have been accustommed to before coming here So far we have done fine down here for a soldier

Jane I am glad that you have such sympathy for the soldiers and that you write us so many kind sister like letters The candle is about out so I'd better come to a close. We hope to have the joys of meeting you all in peace at home once more but should we be deprived of this I hope we'll meet in that "sweet home" where we'll never part again

Write soon—

Your Brother
Carroll Harriss
