Benjamin McCulloch to William C. Adams, 21 February 1861

Lieut Wm Adams

Sir
You had better get such men as wish to join the service for twelve months should the convention call two Reg into the field when it assembles, which I think will most certainly be done. Get the best horses you can & get them in good order whilst at the Post for service in the spring. You will be entitled to forage for them if it is at your post when the Federal troops leave
The service you enter now is temporary but should you & your men wish to go into the Regiments raised by the convention you shall have all the influence I can bring to bear in your favour.
Ben McCulloch

PS be ready soon, you may be call on at any moment, should the Receiver be sent by the commissioners, send what men you have with him & let the others follow
