Sir
Yours of the 21st ult was duly rcd At the time of the rcp I was absent on an Indian scout but the citizens appointed recruiting officers that no time might be lost by my absence of which I suppose you have been advised. I returned from the the Indian scout on Monday last after having followed the Indians from the previous Tuesday in conjunction with Lieut Arnold of 2d Cavalry but owing to the fact of our horses giving out and the Indians continually remounting on fresh horses we was compelled to give up the chase near the Rio Frio below the mouth of the Leona. On my return I immediately found a company of citizens numbering 24 men and started them on Tuesday morning for the Chacon to intercept the Indians on their way up the country.
From the fact of the great necessit of continued scouting after Indians & protect the frontier I have been unable to regularly organize my company but many who have joined are still on the [?] but I have a sufficient men at my command to take charge of the property at Fort Inge and Camp Wood as soon as the commission arrives which will probably be to day
