Sir       The undersigned in command of the Company garisoning the military posts of Camp wood on the Nueces River and Fort Inge on the Leona River would respectfully submit. That in persuance of a commission from Col Ben McCulloch dated 21st Feb 1861 a copy which is hereto annexed I proceeded in the early part of last month to enlist men for the said commission Services specified, in said commission. That on the seventh day of said month of March the following persons to wit Peter T Adams Henry P Courtney Daniel Davis John C Davis James C Bowie C A Gillis James M Gordon James M Nicholes Thomas Haynie James H Read Jessee Lewis John Smith Mathew D. Wilkins Edward D Westfall Rufus Allen Martin V. Adams John M McCormick Thales N. McKinney Daniel L McGary Jonathan W Cummings Thomas Horton Thomas J. McKinney Benjamin W. Taylor Elijah A Bates James Adams Samuel Evans Numan M C Patterson and George Allen having been enlisted were accepted and mustered into the Service of the State. On the 14th day of said month of March Captain Whiting of the United States Army who was commanding at Camp Wood having delivered over said Post & property to W. R. Story Reciever for the State of Texas I immediately assumed the command of said Post and stationed the following men / To Wit P. T. Adams H. P. Courtney D. Davis J. C. Davis J. C. Bowie H. A. Gillis J. M. Gorden Thomas Haynie James H Read Jessee Lewis John Smith N D Wilkins E D Westfall Samuel Evans James Adams and James M Nicholes there for a Garison designing to fill out the complement of twenty five men for said Garison as speedily as men could be enlisted for that Service. That the following named persons were enlisted and recieved into Service at the dates annexed to their names respectfully respectively William Morris on the 20th day of March William J Adams John Rector Phillip Waters and Ernest Wigler on the 21st Charles Hadley on the 23rd A. J. Griner on the 24 and William Bishop on the 25th day of March. That all of said persons last named excepting Ernest Wigler (who was temporarriarly stationed at Fort Inge were as soon as practable after their enlistment added to the Camp Wood Garrison. That an other addition to said Garison was made in the person of Rufus Allen who having having enlisted at an earlier date was detained by Indian scouts and on duty at Fort Inge untill the second day of the present month. That all of the men afforsaid have been regularly and constantly on duty at Camp Wood ever since they were stationed there. With the following / exceptions To Wit Samuel Evans was on the 10th inst. dismissed from Service for disobedience to orders Charles Hadley deserted on the first inst. And H P Courtney James C Bowie Phillip Watters and William Morris were on the seventh inst. detached to Fort Inge on Special Service at which said Post the said Courtney Bowie and Waters yet remain, the said Morris having been on on the 14th inst. discharged from the Service for Insubordinate Conduct.
 
            The Undersigned would further submit that on the 19th day of March AD 1861 Capt James Okes of the United States Army commanding at Fort Inge having delivered said Post to the Reciever W R Story, I immediately assumed the command of said Post and placed there as a Garison of the same Sergeant Thales N McKinney with the following Privates to wit T J McKinney J M McCormick T Horton M Adams D L McGary J W Cummings B W Taylor and N M Patterson and E A Bates. That on said 19th day of March said Taylor and Patterson withdrew from and abandoned said Post and Service That on the 26th day of said month said Bates withdrew from said Service That on the 29 of said month said McGary withdrew from said Post and Service That said Cummings and / & Horton withdrew from said Service on the 1st inst. and that said T. J. McKinney did withdraw from said Service on the 5th inst that James C Dodd did enlist in said service and was entered as part of Fort Inge Garrison on said 19th day of March and did continue therein untill the first inst. at which time the said Dodd did quit and aban said Service.  That Jasper Saturn on the 25th day of March and Robert M Wood on the 4th inst did enlist in said Service and were stationed at Fort Inge as part of the Garrison thereof. That said J M McCormick and Martin Adams from the time of the surrender of said Post and said M Wood & Saturn from the time of their respective enlistments have continued in active Service at said Post at Fort Inge at said and that said Thales N McKinney was attacked with sickness soon after entering upon Service at Fort Inge and yet remains upon the sick list J M McCormick having discharged the duties of Sergeant at said Post during the sickness of the said McKinney The undersigned would further submit that he has used every effort of which he was capable in maintaining the the Garisons at said Posts and is happy to be able to announce that said Garrisons have been maintained in sufficient force for all the duties that have been / required of them and he only regrets the necesity of stating—which statement he makes in justice to those who after having enlisted abandoned the Service—that each person who has voluntarily withdrawn from the Service has given to the undersigned as the reason for such a step that the arrogant officious and intermedlesom disposition manifisted by Mr Reciever W R Story who has quartered himself with his family at fort Inge was utterly insufferble all of which with the annexed statement (marked Exhibit B) of Rations to this date drawn for my Command is Respectfully submitted
