A. A. Johnston to Elisha P. Langworthy, 18 July 1861
Fort Bliss Texas July 18th 1861

Dr Longworthy

Dear Sir
I sent in my resignation as surgeon of Ft Lancaster dated July 1st 1861 and have not heard whether it was received or not. If it was not received, I now inform you of the fact. I think I can serve my country better at this place than at Ft Lancaster.

Respectfully
A. A. Johnston

PS Times are becoming exciting in this country. Fort Filmore is being fortified reinforcements daily coming to their assistance but I think ere long we will have them hired. We have at times more sickness in this post than one Physician can attend to.

Yours
A.A.J.
