Off. Med. Director, &c.
S. Antonio, Tex, August 8th, 1861.
Sir
I have the honor to enclose a letter rec'd from Act Ass't Surgeon Johnston, from Ft. Bliss, for the action of the Gen'l Com'd'g.
Dr Johnston was under contract with the Quarter Master's Depart (by Maj. Maclin) to serve as Actg Ass't Surgeon in the provisional forces and was sent to Ft. Lancaster for duty at that post. No report or communication had been rec'd at this office from him since he left here, until the enclosed paper came to hand. By whose authority Dr J. left Ft Lancaster, is not known, but probably by his own.
The date of his contract is May 24th, '61.
Very respectfully,
