John R. Baylor to William C. Adams, 18 August 1861
Head Quarters Ft Bliss
Aug 18th 1861.
Capt Adams,
Sir
News from above renders it necessary to increase the force here as soon as possible. You will therefore on the receipt of these orders take up the line of march for this place leaving a 2nd Lieutenant with 20 men to take charge of your post.
The enemy are concentrating as I learn at Ft Craig for an attack on Ft Fillmore and number some 1200 men in all. Come as soon as possible not to injure your animals.
respectfully
Jno R Baylor
Lt. Col. Cmdg
