John James to William C. Adams, 17 September 1861
San Antonio, Sept 17th 1861
Capt. Adams
Fort Davis
Texas
Dear Sir
Mr Moke who I understand is the suttler of Fort Davis and I being the owner of it have rented it to our Government, reserving the suttlers store, having the priviledge to rent it to the person who may be selected as suttler at $20 per month should he desire to occupy it at that price. Mr Moke has agreed to pay the rent, and as you are the Commanding Officer, you will please put the suttler in possession. My interest is to secure a small rent for this property, not wishing to interfere with / the [?] of the troops on the premises.
I am perfectly satisfied that Mr Moke will pay the rent as agreed upon between us.
Yours truly
John James
