John S. Ford to William C. Adams, 14 August 1862
Austin, August 14, 1862.

Dear Capt.
Enclosed you will find an order from Gen. Van Dorn which lept out of the packet on Tuesday. You will discover it is full endorsement of my course up to the time. If there is any thing extant indicative of a charge against me from that officer it has never been shown.

Major Pyron and others may misrepresent me but I am going to trouble them to prove their allegations. I have done my duty. I may not have acted in accordance with the views of certain office-seeking gentry but I am confident I did all my power to promote the interests of the country, and I am sure the patriot will thank me if the others abuse me.

Your friend
John S. Ford

State of Texas
County of Cameron    Personally appeared before the undersigned authority John S. Ford, to me well known, who after being sworn, says:
I have known Nathan Mitchell since the year 1844. The fact of his having been in the service of Texas in 1836, and in the battle of San Jacinto, is notoriously known and has been recognized and acknowledged in my presence by John M. Swisher and others who served at the same time, and the said Nathan Mitchell now in Brownsville, Cameron county, Texas, is the identical person so recognized and acknowledged, and I believe his claim for a pension under the laws of the State of Texas is just and well founded.
