George R. Gear to Sister, 6 November 1864
Atlanta, Ga., Nov. 6th 1864.

My Dear Sister:
Again I take pen in hand to write you a few lines, although it has been about seven weeks since I have received any tidings from home. Affairs do not look very prosperously for me just now. In all probability that box I have ordered will never reach me. Appearances portend great changes here. Atlanta is to be evacuated, and the 15th, 17th and 20th Corps are to go on a grand raiding expedition, either to Savannah or Mobile, establishing communication by way of the coast or gulf. Such is the reported programme here, and I think it a very probable one. The most valuable property is being removed as fast as possible, and the Army of the Tennessee is said to be on its way back here. /

I hope to receive some letters when I rejoin my Regiment, although I am afraid that I shall lose even those, as I wrote to Wm Pfeiffer ordering him to send my letters to me at General Hospital. He may retain them however as the Regiment is coming this way. Of course those letters directed to Gen'l Hosp'l will never reach me. If I have to start on the grand campaign before receiving letters it will be pretty hard; for in all probability there will be opportunity neither to send or receive mail then for four or five weeks.

I am still in my old place, although our work is about finished up here. I hear that our Regiment is near here, and I suppose they will come here in a day or two.

Somehow, I feel very little in a letter writing mood to-day, / and you must pardon this short scribble. I am in pretty good health now.

Your aff. Brother,
George
