George R. Gear to Jerusha Gear, 22 December 1864
10 miles southwest Savannah, Ga.
Dec. 22, 1864.
My Dear Mother:
I improve the first opportunity which has presented itself since leaving Atlanta of writing a few words home. I have no time to write much to-day, however. I hope soon to be able to give you an extended account of our long march. Since leaving Atlanta we have marched between four hundred and five hundred miles, and have passed through many scenes of interest. I have stood the trip first rate, and never was in better health or spirits than now. Savannah is ours as you have probably heard ere this, and we have utterly destroyed in our course about 300 miles / of railroad.
But I must close for the present. Write soon. I received a mail the other day, containing one or two letters from Jerusha and yourself. Write soon. Address 1st Brig. 1st Div. 17th A.C. Savannah, Ga.
Please send me a penholder I have lost mine. Also a pocket diary for 1865 and a lead pencil. Send a diary about the size of an envelope.
Will write again in a day or two. All the members of our company are well.
In haste,
Your aff. Son,
George.
