George R. Gear to Jerusha Gear, 27 January 1865
Pocotaligo, S.C., Jan. 27, 1865

My Dear Mother:
Yesterday I was gladdened by the reception of three letters from home.—Yours of the 11th and Jerusha's of Dec. 22d and Jan. 10th. The socks, housewife and penholder were received also, for which please accept my hearty thanks. You spoke of a diary and pocket knife but neither of these were received. It seems that I have forgotten to mention the reception of the socks that Jno. Stewart had in charge. They came to hand safely.

Soon we depart on another grand raid; whither I know not, but rumor says that it is a trip of 300 miles. We may leave to-morrow, but probably will not for a day or two yet. If we do not, I will write again. To-day it is too cold to write. You must not worry about me. I start in good health.

Your letters sent to Atlanta in care Chris. Com. were never received.

Direct your letters to my Brigade, Division and Corps, via New York, without any special place, and they will reach me. Write often

If I have not other opportunity to write, you will probably not hear from me for several weeks.

My love to all.
Your aff. Son,
George

I am comfortably provided with clothing.
