George R. Gear to Jerusha Gear, 28 April 1865
Raleigh, N.C. April 28th 1865.
My Dear Mother:
Back in Raleigh again you see; and back for but a brief period however. But when next we move it will not be "toward the enemy", but homeward. Johnson has surrendered, and our work here consequently is finished. To-morrow we turn our steps northward. A long march is before us, but the thought that each step will bring us that much nearer our home will serve to encourage us in our way. We shall probably march to Washington, and don't fail to send the money I spoke about. It will probably take about one month to make the march. I trust to be at home within 60 days. Of course / we are all overjoyed at the prospect of a speedy return to our homes, and shall impatiently await the time when we can be mustered out. I have not time to write much to-day, and you must not expect to hear from me again for two or three weeks.
William Pfeiffer was mustered in as a 2d Lieut. a day or two since. He intends to write you soon I believe.
Your aff. Son,
George.
P.S.—The order of march just received names Richmond as the point to which the 17th Corps will proceed.
