George R. Gear to Jerusha Gear, 9 May 1865
Richmond, Va., May 9th 1865.

My Dear Mother:
After a rapid march of eight days from Raleigh we find ourselves in sight of the famous former Confederate Capitol. We yesterday passed through Petersburg, and at 8 o'clock this morning arrived here, on the south bank of the James. From Raleigh to Petersburg our march averaged over 20 miles per day, and that too although we were delayed one whole day in crossing Roanoke River. Some days we marched as high as 30 miles. The distance between Raleigh and Richmond is about 170 miles. I have stood the march excellently, and am in the best of health. We will probably halt here not more than a day or two and then we shall be off for Washington, where we will probably arrive about the 18th or 19th.

If we remain here to-morrow I will write again; otherwise you will hear from me next at Alexandria.

I have no time to write more now.

Your aff. Son,
George.
