Dear Brother
it is the gratest of plasure that I have this present opportunety to answer yours of the 29 whitch I recived last night I was very glad to hear that you was well I am well and hope these fiew lines will find you all right on the goose well / thare is not much news to tell you night before last I was on guard and at one oclock at night was roused up by the quick discharges of heavy cannon we could se the sky lighted up by them into line we got in a jiff redy for eny emirgency well it prooved that the Rebels come and planted three batrys on the other side of the river and tride to shell our camp but ware glad to quit for the seage guns we had up at Fair Oaks we had planted on this bank and I dont want to stand within a foot and / a half of whare one of those shells drop well I guess thay will have enuff to tend to farther up the river be fore long you wrote abot Father coming to try Solgering that would be very rong I think I and you can do his fighting for him I will do all I can we dont know what thay will do with our Regment yet thay will not recrute us up for our time is up next may and we are midling small in numbers but I can say one thing we can whip the best Regt the Rebels has got I dont mean to say thay / cannot fight or thay are not brave men for thay are Oh! but thay do not fight in a just cause that is the reason we could do it I will tell you if I ever se you how brave thay are well it is a nice morning hear I would like to se you at home I would mow with any thing thay have got if it was a boy boy twenty two years old and could not come a sholgering I can out mow eny such men as thay mint be cald now write soon this from your Brother
