Cyrus F. Rich to Harriet E. Rich, 29 September 1862
Monday morning
Sep 29th 1862
My Dear Wife.
I wrote to you yesterday. To day I am feeling a little better though quite weak. Warren' Son—Seymour—has been to see me and spent the night with me but has gone back to his Regt—five miles from here.
There are a few things I want to have sent to me and want you to have Chas Osborn or some one else bring them to me. I want a small size rubber pillow and a large size rubber cap with cape.
Also a quire of common note paper. If Osborn has left to come on the Regt send by next oppertunity and have the person pay / for them & I will cash the bill here
Monday Eve I have just been to town—Alexandria—and find I can buy the rubber goods &c nearly as cheap as at home But there is one article I do want very much and that is a good cook book—perhaps a "Dime Book" will do with some few additions of your own experience. I want to know how to cook or boil beans & pork and boil rice and fix up a batter of pan cakes. You must remember we have no eggs or soda nor butter milk. We have butter—very poor—salt—flour.
Be sure to tell me all the news and write very very often. Respects to Mat. Tell the boys that Papa thinks of them evry day and wants them / to be good children
Give Guy a good kiss for me every night
You may address one letter to me as follows, and see if it will come safely
