My Deare cousin
it is with grate sattifaction that I seat myself this morning to let you know that I am well and enjoying good health I receivd your letter dated July the 6 it came to hand on the twelf day whitch gave me mutch sattifaction to heare from you and to heare that you and all the rest was well and enjoying good health I have no nuse of importence to communicate to you at this time onley our compney was down on picket since the last too dayes down close to City Point yesterday morning about 10 o clock theare came upt 11 transports and 4 gun boats came upt and stayed a while and went back we thot a while that thay was a going to land forces but thay did not and thay had better not 
 
we have grate deal of raine out heare sence the last too weakes we have nothing but raine all the time most. we heard yesterday that the 26 Regt got cut up very bad and the col got killed and the lieut col got wounded very bad we dont know how true it is but I do expect it is so for thay is in a trickey plase we know somthing about that plase for we have ben all over the plase I dont like the plase I wount you to tell me if Russell got home yet or not N A Patterson said he did answer the letter he got in mine theare was some talk of us going to maryland but I am in hopes we never go out theare tell daniel L that I wrote to him some time ago but haven receivd a answer yeat I like very so well to get a letter from one of you tell fathers famley to write to me I wrote to father when I was at Drewrys Bluff but haven got a answer yeat tell uncle Dugald to answer my letter nothing moore at present onley I remaine your cousin till death H M McD
