Dear friend
I seat my self this evening for the perpose of droping you a few lines in answer to your verry kind letter which I was truly glad to hear from you I have not had time to write a letter sence I came from home with out I would write at night and did not have many nights to write for I have been on duty nearly every day sence I left home We left Kinston NCa last Sunday evening and left for Petersburg Va we have just arrived We are in the town now a wating for orders They have been a fiting here for the last three days The Yankees have tore up the Rail Rode in two places between here and Weldon NCa and burned two bridges it is allmost impossible to get transportation but I think they are enough of us here now to get them shot up if we will get beehind our breast works I heard to / day sence I came to this place that General R E Lee give old Grant the worse whippen the Yankees ever got sence the war commenced I hope it is so and we will be able to give them them the same dost here I could tell you a great deal more a bout there fiting if I had paper and time but I have not got neather We left all our Begade back at hamilton so you must excuse a short letter this time & maby I will have time to write you a long letter the next time There are a great many of our company sick to day but I dont think there is any thing the matter with them more than being broke down
