Dear Cousin
I take my pen in hand to inform you that I am well at presant and I hope if these few lines will reach your hands thay will find you and all the family well I no news of any importance to communicate to you at presant I have been with the company nearly two week I left Brother John at the hospital in Raleigh verry sick and I heard the other day that he was worse I would liked to have been with him if I could but it is imposible for me to leave the camp now we lost for men since we came to virginia D C Smith and andrew goins was kild on the / and james L Cameron and phileom Rag and K M Campbell died since the fight and they is few in the hospital yet
 
I dont get much time to rite these days we have to work so hard throwing up brest works and drilling I have not got a letter from that neighborhood since I left Raleigh I rote to you be fore we left kinston but I learn you got it or if you did and answered it I never got the answer I just came off of gard and I did not have to go to work this evening I expect we will have another fight some of these days the yankes keeps comeing nigher every day we have no field officers now but Capt g. h. Kelly he has been promoted to the office / of major and E McN Blue captian I must bring my uninterresting letter to a close rite soon and fail not direct your letter to Proctors Creek PO in care of Capt J. M. Kelly Co C 35 Regt
