Camp Mangum Raleigh
April the 15th 1862
Miss Sarah J. McDonald I am well at present and in hopes this will find you well too I am lying flat down on the floor while I write we are living very well living in white houses eating confedreate mule meat bacon and flour rice shugar cracling and so many good things I cannot recolect them all all of our company is all well except Daniel Bidle & Times Neall we dont do any thing hardly but eat and sleep we are geting so lazy that we have to be lifted out of the bed in the morning with hand sticks you need not believe every thing I say but there is more truth in it than you think we have got our uniforms and we look tolerable well considern we are such a shaby crowd we have joined the 46th Regt N.C. we have been here nealy three weeks and none of you wrote to us yet and if I live to go home I will come down on all of you like a thousand brick on a roten potatoe all of our Boys is in love up to there eyes James Turgudon is cook in our mess he makes as fine looking biscuit as you ever saw I think he would make a fine wife and if I was a girl I would court him strong I am tolerble well satisfied But it goes across the grain for me to leave all that I love so dear when past time recoletions comes pressing in my mind it almost makes the tears roll down my cheeks we sees lots of gals here some of them looks as fine and fresh as rose buds in june and there is some others we call them pie peddlers they looks like they were drawn through hell and back with a sut bag
I want you to write to me soon and tell me all the news tell all the girls to write to me
nothing more at present
