A.A.General
Sir,
I have the honor to state for the information of the Lt General Commanding the Department that on the 18th ult. at Camargo I received the letters of Governor Pettus and himself touching the question of jurisdiction of Troops in this District.
The accompanying copies of my letter to General Gholson and his reply cover nearly all the ground so far as my official actions have been concerned. I am not aware of any orders or act of mine which has been in conflict with the jurisdiction of His Excellency Gov. Pettus, whose views on the subject of the respective organisations, have been, I have supposed well understood by me.
At this moment, moreover, I am enabled to state that there is a full understanding and harmonious action between General Gholson and myself.
I have to request that this letter be referred to his Excellency the Governor with its enclosures for his information.
Very respectfully
Your obdt servant
