Edward W. Peck to Mother, 28 October 1862
Hospital of 1st Ct Artillery
Oct 28th 1862
Dear Mother, I received your letter in due time James brought it to me. He received the box all right. You sent me a good warm blanket for which I am thankful. I used most of the currants they made a very good drink for me. the spices I did not need & told James he might keep them. they have corn starch here in the hospital so I have not used mine yet. I have had the best of care taken of me. My nurse has made bread puddings & custards for me whenever I wanted them. all I had to do was to pay for the milk & eggs which he had to buy. I have a nice straw bed to lie on with plenty of blankets. I am getting along first rate. I set up now all day. It has been a nice day to day & I have been out doors for the first time. I have a good appetite, can eat like everything.
I think I shall be able to go back to my Co in a short time I shall try & be careful & not get along to fast & get sick again. Gould has sent me a bottle of blackberry jelly since I have been sick which was very good. I eat at the table now with the rest. we have very good living. It seems almost like being in Ct again. I feel thankful to God because he has been so good to me & raised me from a sick bed so soon. I have been sick 6 weeks last Sunday. My hand trembles some & I cant write very good.
But I must close I send my love to all of you. I wrote to Mary on sunday. Write soon
Your Affec Son
