Varnells Station July 1st/64
 
Dear Brother
It has been some time since I have received a letter from you before I was glad to hear from you I have just had a letter from home it come with yours I am well as usual we are haveing a good time here we are nine miles from Dalton we are encamped in an old rebs orchard I and some others stay in an old tannery it is a cooler place than the tents we drill before breakfast one hour 
 
Alfred Davis is dead he was shot on picket to he was in the 29 Ohio we took a deserter from the rebel army he run on to our pickets one night be fore he knew it Varnells station is a rail road station there is about a dozen houses here and a water tank there is no depot the cars have not run here since they fetched us down here we have got a hand car here that the boys have been to Dalton on they went to Cleveland on it / the other day we are six miles in Georgia from the north line Mother wrote the particulars of Williams death Henry Stahl I expect is on the road here we left him at Camp Nelson he had been sick with the lung fever and was not well enough to come when we came they have not heard from Charles since he was taken prisioner no more at present Give my best respecks to all enquireing
