George R. Gear to Jerusha Gear, 9 May 1863
Corinth, Miss. May 9, '63.
Dear Mother:
Yesterday I wrote to you and spoke of the probability of our remaining here this summer. But little do we soldiers know what a day may bring forth. To-day I was at the creek washing when news came that there were marching orders again. The report is now that we go to Memphis by Rail Road. We have orders to be ready to leave at a moment's notice. We are packed up ready to leave. Possibly we may not go. Should we not, I will let you know in a day or two, and should we leave, I will try to write from Memphis. Of course, it is useless to send that box. Write to me and still direct to Corinth, and the letters will reach me anywhere.
Your Son,
George
