George R. Gear to Jerusha Gear, 27 July 1863
Schofield Barracks,
St. Louis, Mo.
July 27, 1863

Dear Mother:
I snatch a few moments this morning to inform you of my whereabouts. We arrived in this city night before last, and yesterday morning went to Alton; but the prison there being full, we yesterday returned to this city and unloaded our cargo. We are still here this morning, but I presume that we shall start back some time to-day. I saw at Alton, Edgar Pearce, Ed. Dale Jessee Sinclair and Fred Burich. Their regiment goes to Helena this week.

Perhaps you will wonder at my writing on such paper. It is a specimen of Southern writing paper which I procured from some of the prisoners. For this delec- / table paper they pay only $1.00 a quire and for the envelope in which you will find this enclosed $1.00 per package.

I am in a hurry, and can write no more at present

Still direct to Memphis,

Your Son
George /
