George R. Gear to Jerusha A. Ewart, 24 August 1863
Memphis, Tenn. Aug. 24, 1863.

Dear Sister:
Your last letter was received a day or two since, and I will to-day write a word or two in answer, although there is nothing of special interest.

The weather is intensely warm, and considerable sickness prevails. These very warm days our railroad trip is rather pleasant, as the motion of the cars creates a pleasant refreshing breeze. My health still continues good. Truly I have great cause of thankfulness for the signal manner in which I have been blest in this respect since entering the army.

A military movement in this Department is on foot. It is said that the destination of the / expedition is Little Rock, Ark., and thence to Texas. All the troops along the road between this city and Corinth have been withdrawn, and their places supplied by a brigade from Corinth. It is said also that a Brigade from this city is to unite in the expedition. Perhaps we may be the one. I would much prefer to remain in camp until the latter part of September, but of course we are subject to orders and have not the freedom of choice. However we may not be called upon to move.

I am now writing in the rooms of the U.S. Christian Commission. They have opened a room in the city, where soldiers can go at all hours of the day, and read papers and books at their pleasure. They have also tables, with pen, ink and paper at hand for all / who wish to write. At 4 o'clock of each day a prayer meeting is held for one half hour. I think the Commission is doing a great work, and I hope it will be well sustained by the Christian public at home.

I feel but little in a letter writing mood to-day, and there is absolutely nothing of interest to write. Therefore taking heed to the maxim, "When you have nothing to say, say nothing", I will close.

Your Brother,
George.

Remember me to all the family. Are Alice and Mary at home?
