George R. Gear to Jerusha Gear, 18 October 1863
On the March,
Germantown, Tenn.
Oct. 18, 1863.

Dear Mother:
I am at last, again in the field. We left Memphis this morning, and reached here (where we camp to-night) about 2 o'clock this afternoon. The distance from Memphis to this place is about 16 miles. We are en route to Corinth, and have yet a distance of about 85 miles before us. It is not at all probable that we shall stay in Corinth any length of time, but we shall probably be transferred to Sherman's Corps, and go with him on his expedition.

I was not fortunate enough to receive my overcoat before leaving. I hope to find it at Corinth however by the time we reach there, as I left orders to have it forwarded to Corinth / as soon as it arrives. Should I receive it there, I will not regret paying a little extra for the sake of saving the carriage of it on my back for 100 miles.

We were paid off yesterday for two months, but I had no opportunity of sending home my money before leaving Memphis. Probably we will have opportunity at Corinth, when I will send you $25. I sold my watch to-day for $6, as I do not wish to have the trouble of constantly paying such enormous prices for having it fixed. I think I did pretty well in the bargain. I have had it 3 years, and it cost me in the first place only $6.50.

It seams natural to be on the road once more. I have stood the day's march very well, considering the long time since I have done anything of the kind.

I shall not probably write you again for about a week. I delayed writing until to-day as I wanted to be certain that our marching orders would not be countermanded.

Direct your letters to Corinth now until I order otherwise.

I got me a good rubber blanket before leaving Memphis as my old one was about worn out.

Your Son,
George.
