George R. Gear to Sister, 25 October 1863
Memph
Corinth, Miss., Oct. 25, 1863.
Dear Sister:
I came near forgetting that I was about 100 miles from Memphis but such is indeed the fact. The Regiment reached here about 11 o'clock last evening, and I snatch a moment to inform you that I am still in the land of the living and well. To-morrow we leave for Iuka. I have a good many things to see to to-day, and have barely time to write you concerning my whereabouts. Suffice it to say that in some respects we have had a pretty hard trip of it from Memphis to this place. As soon as I can get time I will write you somewhat concerning it. Report says that we stop at Iuka.
Your letter of the 17th was received to-day.
I will send mother $25 by the first opportunity.
I have no time to write more now. Direct your letters to Corinth.
Your Brother
George.
