George R. Gear to Jerusha Gear, 11 February 1864
Camp Dennison, Feb. 11, 1864

Dear Mother:
We arrived here last evening, safe and sound. To-day we have been idling around, passing the time rather tediously. It is reported that we are to leave on boats to-morrow, and it comes in a pretty authentic shape too. Col. Noyes telegraphed so to our Captain. Not much more than one half the regiment are here as yet, but I presume that the most of them will be here to-night.

The transition from the comforts of home to the realities of soldier life is scarcely as difficult as I had anticipated. To be sure I found that there was a considerable difference between a feather bed and a hard board, the difference being decidedly in favor of the bed. But we soon become accustomed to this. /
But I am called away by other duty and must close. I will write whenever I have opportunity, but probably will not be able to do so very often until we get settled somewhere.

Everything goes on with the regular routine of army life.

In haste,
Your Son,
George.
