Sarah Jane Rockwood (maiden name: Pratt) was born around 1826 in Massachusetts to John and Emma Pratt. She married George W. Rockwood on August 3, 1845, and they had at least two children: Charles, born around 1848; and Mary, born around 1866. They settled in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, and her husband worked as a painter. George served in the Union army from July 1861 until January 1863 and again from August 1864 until June 1865.
He returned home soon afterward, and the family moved to Sterling, Massachusetts, sometime in the late 1860s. By 1870, the family owned $200 of personal property. They moved to Marlborough, Massachusetts, sometime in the 1870s. Her husband died in Waltham, Massachusetts, on April 18, 1896. She applied for a widow’s pension the following month and eventually secured one. By 1900, she was living in Newton, Massachusetts, with her daughter Mary. She died there on June 12, 1916.
