My Dear Wife
your favor of the 14th has come to hand and I hasten to answer. I am better than when I last wrote and have got so my cheeks stick out and I show good keeping I think I am as fleshy as I ever was and another thing I dont mean to go to my Regt again for I think I couldn't stand it and what's the use. I should like to come home and see you all and stay again with you never more to leave but I suppose I must wait patiently until I can get a chance / what do you think if I should be lucky enough to get my discharge I had better to come home or if I can get a good chance stay here and work at carpenter work. They pay men 45 dollars a month to work at this business here besides their board & for this winter I thought if I could get my discharge and a job here I had better stay here and come home in the spring if I was at work here that way I could come when I pleased and I suppose business is not very good for me to do much near there this winter I write this to see what you think of it & write me as soon as you get this and then if I am lucky enough I can do which we think for the best &c
You probably have heard long before this of the removal of McClellan and the appointment of Burnside in his place We all hope it is for the best but there is a great deal of disappointment manifested among the Soldiers. It is very seldom I hear a word said against McClellan it is impossible to find a General that the Soldiers all love as well as they do him but as I said before we all hope for the best and we feel confident that Burnside will do well so I must close for this time hoping these few lines will find you well give my love to all the folks and keep a generous share for yourself and the little ones so dear
Truly Yours
Samuel Mills
