Elizabeth Simon to Henry Simon, 2 March 1864
Providence Mar 2st 1864

Dear Father
I suppose you think that I never intend to write, but have been waiting for an answer to the one I wrote you but have not received any. I had wondered that you had not received it, but I hope you will get this one. Maggie is in New York yet but is expected home the last of the week. She wrote home that she had written to you which I suppose you have got telling you of Uncle William's death. poor man how much he has suffered but is past all suffering now. Adele and the baby are very sick. Adele has had one of her spells which are very bad. I hope that she will get better but she has been sick so much that it is hardly doubtful that she will be well again. I feel real sorry for the girls for they must feel dreadful bad. We would have liked to have gone to the funeral but it cost so much that we could not go. I wish that Auntie would come here and live but I think she would not so there would not be any use asking her.

were there any men in your company that have died lately. the reason why I ask is that there was a colord woman in Mrs Comstock's the other day she wanted me to ask if those two men whose names are John Simons and his brother were living for she had not heard from them since they went away. she seemed to feel very bad about it. The third and fourth Regiment have come home on a furlough they are going back next month. only think if you had staid you might have been home now. I suppose Ernest dont care about coming now he likes so well. I am very glad he likes. I thought that he would not like camp life. Tell him that Alphonse Sunderland and Lemuel Field have reenlisted again. this is not a very long letter but I must close as it is half past five and I have got to get ready to carry it to the office. so goodbye

From your daughter that
loves you
Lizzie
