George B. McClellan to James C. Fulton, 28 May 1863
Printer
New York May 28th/63
Jas C Fulton Esq
Dear Sir
Your letter of the 27th is received
I regarded our conversation as entirely a private one, brought on in consequence of the note of introduction you brought to me from Judge Blair. I had no idea of talking for the public nor that our interview should lead to any letters for publication
Your letter as a general thing expresses my views, which you have made in some cases subtler things & wider than I intended, & in others less so.
But, for reasons which I need not explain, I have made it a rule to avoid writing letters for publication & have sought to remain as quiet as possible, and I do not feel that the time has yet arrived for me to depart from my custom, and I therefore request that my conversation may not be regarded as a subject for publication
With many thanks for your good opinion & kind feeling I am very sincerely your friend
Geo B McClellan
