August sunday 28th 1864
 
            Dear parents I received your letter to day and was glad to here that you were well We are well as usual I have had two biles one on my knee and have not done any duty for a week but I am all rite now. We have moved from front of pettersburge over crossed the appamattic over with in one mile of the James to a place called hatches farm We dont do any picket duty now but we have work enough to do. frank has gone out as orderly that is to carry dispatches from one place to another. We expect to get paid of in two or three weeks. We shall be musterd for pay the first day of august that will make three times we are musterd every two months. they owe us $130 a piece now but we shant get / $90 4 months pay and and one installment. i wish they would pay us of so that we can have some money once more i know what it is to want money where a fellow has to live on salt pork and hardtack and not half enough at that. some of the time we get soft bread and fresh meat. if a fellow has money he can get a little butter and cheese and it is prety good i dont see why that box dont come. i wish you would send us the express bill and send us some more money in the next letter and when we get paid of we will send you a few cents. you say that unkle phineas is at city point i wish you write and tell what company he is in so that we can write to him. We got that letter that you and miss gavitt wrote i have just received a letter from unkle phineas so i know where were to direct his letters/ he says he is well as usual he says he is about two miles from city point i shall rite to him to day if i get time. Steven cole is well he wants to know what regiment bill cole is in. tell the boys to rite to us. i want you to send us some more postage stamps. my watch has had some prety hard nocks but it runs rite along there is onely three watches in the company that goes my watch got kicked by a horse but did not hurt it mutch as it is so stout if it had been some watch it would have been smashed all to pieces. i have not got time to rite any more as i have got some washing to do. i send love to all of you
