hampton hospital Jan 25th 1865
 
Dear mother I received your kind and welcom letter and was glad to here from you that you were are well I am well as usual there has not been any snow here yet. It is prety cold here now. there has been a good many wounded come in from the expedition that went to fort fisher. there was one reg got blowed up it was the 169th NY. there were 200 left after the explosion. yesterday afternoon I went down to beach and I found a photergraph and i thought I would send it home just for the fun of it and i found a peace of bone and made a ring of it I will you a present of it. /
 
I want you to send me a little box I want a good jack knife and 2 or 3 lbs of butter and some cheese and cakes and some peanuts &&&&
 
i expect to get payed of the first of next month I have been musterd for two months pay that is all i shall get now. I want you to send me money to pay for my washing the hospital close are lousey as the old harry. Wye dont you write oftiner I will answer every letter you have amineto write. tell Jason to write. I send my respect to him tell ruben to writ I see he has got to be a prety good writer I have got a piece of a vest that I will send to you that come from fort fisher it belong to the rebel col. lamb that was taken prisoner he went by the hospital / under a niggar guard. did have much cider last fall I suppose you have a plenty of apples now how many cows has father got now I do not think of any thing els to write this time so i must
